Mary Addison (15). m. Henry Harris who was a sailor on the Ship Portsmouth. They fell in love during the Ship Brooklyn stopover in Hawaii. Later in San Francisco, Henry brought a law suit against Sam Brannan on behalf of all the passengers asking for return of the funds that they believed Sam had confiscated for himself. It was a lost cause from the beginning. The passengers had signed a 3-year pact to pool their assets. The law suit failed. Henry and Mary moved to Hawaii and kept a store in Honolulu.

Nancy Laura Aldrich (17), b. 28 Aug 1828 to Silas Aldrich and Prudence Clark in Gloucester Providence, RI., m. Alondus de Lafayette Buckland, had 3 children, went with her family to Utah with the "Gold Train" in 1848. She was the first school teacher in Bountiful, UT. 2nd married James Buckland, brother of Alondus.

Edwin Nelson Austin (5), b. 5 Sep 1840, Suffield, Hartford Co., CT., m. 1st Alnora Naomi Lane, m. 2nd, Emma Wood, Alnora=s half sister, they were parents of 21 children. Edwin was LDS Bishop for 44 years and first sheriff of Bear Lake County, ID. He served a brief mission in San Diego, CA where he located the grave of Sam Brannan in 1898.

Elizabeth Wallace Bird (1 mo.), b. 1 Jan 1846 Cambridge, MA. Her mother, Mary Montgomery, died three days after her birth so her father, Edmund Fuller Bird gave her into the care of the Stark Family. She m. 16 Dec 1861 Henry Nelson Howell and mothered 11 children. In 1940, she was celebrated as the oldest living passenger to sail on the Ship Brooklyn.

Samuel Brannan (27), b. 2 Mar 1819, Saco, York County, ME. to Thomas Brannan and Sarah Emery. He published "The California Star" newspaper which announced the discovery of gold. He was excommunicated 1 Sept 1851 by Parley P. Pratt for "unchristian like conduct, neglect of duty, and combining with lawless assemblies to commit murder and other crimes". He was California's first millionaire, and at one time owned 1/3 of the City of Sacramento, 1/4 of the City of San Francisco, and 2 of the City of Los Angeles. (His older sister, Mary Ann Brannan and her husband Alexander Badlam, remained faithful LDS members.)

Ann Eliza Corwin Brannan (24), b. 1 Apr 1823 Litchfield, CT. Divorced Sam Brannan. Her last known residence was "The Old Ralston Mansion" on 2nd Street, San Francisco, CA. about 1888. She lost all the money she received from Sam Brannan through the divorce settlement by investing in Comstock Lode stocks.
d. 1916 penniless in San Francisco.

Samuel L. Brannan (2 mo.), b. 17 Nov 1845. At 9 years of age Sam Jr. and his three sisters were taken to Europe by their mother, and he was educated at Geneva, Switzerland as a mineralogist. He spent 40 years in Mexican mining operations and lost a fortune in the silver decline of 1898. He never married.
d. 3 Dec 1931 in poverty. Buried next to his father in San Diego, CA.

Hannah Daggett Buckland (43), b. 29 Oct 1802 West Fairlee, Orange, VT. to Joseph Daggett & Mercy Colton. She had a very hard life. She wrote poetry & kept a journal. "'Tis though I'm now so much forgot, Some will think of me again." She was a widow who remarried in San Francisco. Her lost journal was finally found filed under the name of Collins.

Alondus de Lafayette Buckland (20), b. 11 Dec 1823 Turnbridge, VT., son of Joseph Mosley Buckland and Hannah Daggett Buckland. He was a farmer by trade. His work on "New Hope" led to a conflict with Sam Brannan. m. Nancy Laura Aldrich. Alondus took his wife, a new-born daughter, and mother-in-law, Prudence Aldrich, and escorted the "gold train" to Salt Lake City in July of 1849.
d. 22 Jun 1854, of cholera near Ft. Leavenworth, KS. while returning to UT. after completing an LDS Mission in the Eastern States.

He took his family to SLC with members of the Ebenezer Brown Company, leaving California 10 August 1848 and arriving SLC 10 October 1848. He was a farmer by trade.

Emma Phillips Gibbs, m. 3rd Josephine Whittle. He became a leading farmer, freighter, railroad builder and one of the largest land owners in the Richmond, UT Region.

Amassa Burr (34), b.18 Mar 1812 Lyndon, Lewis County, NY to Nathan Burr and Chloe Clark. He was a carpenter by trade. It is thought that Amassa was the first one in the Burr Family to join the LDS Church. He went to SLC in 1848. He never married and upon the death of his mother in 1863, he returned to CA.

Sophia Patterson Clark (22), b. 1826. m. Capt. Edward King, the owner of many lots in San Francisco. At one time he claimed title to Goat Island in the San Francisco Bay. He was appointed the first Harbor Master of San Francisco and given the task of clearing out all the abandoned ships in San Francisco Bay. This was necessary because thousands of seamen jumped their ships in order to head for the gold fields. Sophia spent a number of years living in Ogden, UT., however, the later years of her life were spent in Alameda, CA where she was a member of the LDS, Oakland Branch.

Abraham Marion Coombs (41), b. 1810 to Samuel Coombs and Margaret Langdon in Rockville Center, Nassau County, NY. He ran the Semples Ferry on Carquinez Straight near San Francisco. He was a farmer by trade, they lived on a ranch in Napa, CA. In 1860, he was driving stock from San Bernardino to Utah for the Ephriam Hanks Company when he

Her older brother was Theodore E. Curtis, Sr., a General Authority of the Church. As a widow with four children in tow, she was sent by Erastus Snow to start a school in Cedar City, UT.

Apparently it was lucrative because she is said to have made a $7,000. loan to the Ship Brooklyn Company. She remained a faithful LDS Church member. Her daughter, Eliza Corwin Brannan was devastated by her mother's death.

Lucy Buell Eagar (42), was born 23 Sep 1808, in Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. to Joseph Buell and Hannah Rider. m Thomas Eagar, 1822. She was a widow when she sailed with her children on board The Brooklyn. d. 1 Dec 1888, Monterey, CA.

John Eagar (23), b.13 Jul 1823 Auburn, Cayuga Co., NY. He worked for Sam Brannan as a newspaper printer in NY and CA. He joined the Holmes-Thompson Company at Sly Park in the Sierra's. This is the company that blazed the trail which later became the most traveled route into California during the gold rush. John Eagar recorded his experiences on the trail. Upon his arrival in Salt Lake City, he authored a significant and widely used, "Emigrant's Guide from Great Salt Lake City to San Francisco". It was published by Brigham H. Young in 1849. He taught school at Old Fort, SLC, m. 1 Jul 1849 Sarah Anna Johnson. They had 8 children. After John's death, Sarah Anna moved to Southern Utah and married a widower, Andrew Jackson Workman, a veteran of the Mormon Battalion. They raised 16 children in an isolated place called Virgin, UT.

William Evans (34), b. 6 Apr 1811 Downington, Chester County, PA, son of Esther and Jesse Evans. His family opened a tailor shop on Market Street and Van Ness, San Francisco and made suits for missionaries heading for the Far East. On New Years Day, 1851, William fell off a horse which probably punctured a lung causing his lingering death.

Hannah Roberts Hymes Benner Evans (34), b. 30 Nov 1811 Chester, PA to Jonathan Benner and Janette Hymes. Her family were early Pennsylvania Quakers. The Evans Family and Hannah's two sisters, (Ann H. Crisman and Mary Benner Ludwig) joined the LDS Church in 1833. After the death of her husband in San Francisco, she carried on their tailoring business and took in boarders. She was able to keep the family together. In 1857, she took her family to Utah and they settled in Centerville. She soon moved to SLC where she could find more customers for her tailoring business. d. 30 Mar 1884, Centerville, Davis, UT.

Amanda Miller Evans (12), b. 21 Oct 1833 Brandywine, Chester County, PA., m. 10 Jan 1853 San Francisco, CA. Zacheus Cheney, Mormon Battalion Veteran, President of the LDS Branch San Francisco in 1853. In 1856, he presided over the Alameda LDS Branch, which in 1857, formed a Company of 14 wagons to migrate to Utah. He was appointed their Captain. They departed 28 August 1857. They traveled the Carson Valley Route, arriving in Centerville on 3 Nov 1857. Amanda was the mother of 8 children. This family was related by marriage to the Austin Family and to the Mowry Family.

William Glover, Jr. (33), was born 19 Aug 1813 in Kilmarnock, Ayreshire, Scotland to William Glover, Sr. and Catherine Owens. The family emigrated to Nova Scotia, Canada when William, Jr. was 11 yrs. old. The Family moved to Pottsville, PA in 1836 where they engaged in mining and joined the LDS Church. In San Francisco, William, Jr. owned a boarding house and served as counselor to Sam Brannan. He received the highest number of votes in San Francisco's first Town Council election and carried LDS tithing to SLC on the "gold train"
in July, 1849. He was a missionary in Great Britain 1852-1855. On the return voyage to America, William, Jr. presided over the Emigrant Company consisting of 573 British, Swiss and Italian Saints who sailed from Liverpool on the Jueventa 31 Mar 1855. After a 35 day ocean crossing they anchored at Philadelphia, PA 5 May 1855. (See the "Millenial Star", Vol. 17, page 375.) Later in Farmington, UT, he was the leader of the Deseret Brass Band. He m. 1st Jane Cowan, m. 2nd Zelnora Sophronia Snow, m. 3rd Margaret Lockhead.

John Meir Horner (25), b.15 Jun 1821 Monmouth, Middlesex, NJ. In 1840, he was baptized by Erastus Snow. In California, he was an excellent farmer and made a fortune by selling vegetables to the gold miners; he was a carpenter; he built a Mormon meetinghouse/first schoolhouse in California. He was extremely generous with the Church, missionaries, and needy members. In the money panic of 1854, he lost property worth approximately half a million dollars. The family went to Hawaii in 1879 and managed a sugar cane plantation on the big island.

Caroline Augusta Perkins Joyce (21), was born 13 Jul 1825, Hampton, Rockingham Co., NH to John Perkins and Caroline Harriman. Caroline Augusta Perkins first heard the gospel preached in Boston, MA. Despite intense opposition from her parents, she was baptized in 1843 by Erastus Snow in the Atlantic Ocean. She was extremely talented with words and music. She frequently sang at missionary meetings and was billed as: "The Mormon Nightingale".
She wrote a daily diary entitled: "The Early Annals of California", which is now lost. It chronicled the voyage of the Ship Brooklyn and early life in San Francisco and San Bernardino. She divorced her husband, John Joyce. Ten years after she was baptized in the Atlantic Ocean, she was rebaptized in the Pacific Ocean by Parley P. Pratt. She m. 1852 Col. Alden Appolos Moore Jackson in San Bernardino. On 3 Nov 1869, she was sealed to him in SLC.

Edward Cleveland Kemble (19), b. 11 Nov 1828, Troy, NY to John Cleveland Kemble & Mary Ann Whipple. At age 18 he printed and edited "The California Star" newspaper for Sam Brannan. He enlisted in the War with Mexico serving under Col. J. C. Fremont. He edited various other newspapers in California and returned to the East to become a Civil War correspondent for the Associated Press. After the War, President U. S. Grant appointed him as
Inspector of Indian Affairs. Wrote "A Kemble Reader: Stories of California" (Published by the California Historical Society in 1963). m. 22 April 1856 in NY to Cecilia Amanda Windsor. They had 5 children. He deserves a noteworthy place in the California Press Association's Newspaper Hall of Fame. (Not known to be a member of the LDS Church.)

NOTE: During the Ship Brooklyn layover in Honolulu, several natives came aboard and when they saw the 9-month old Kittleman twin girls, Sally and Hannah, they were delighted and immediately wanted permission to take them ashore and show them to their Queen. The request was granted, but after they had been gone more than two hours, the mother Eliza became alarmed. The ship's crew organized a posse and were ready to start the search when two young native girls came running toward the ship with the infants. They brought numerous gifts from the Queen for their mother.

Samuel Greenleaf Ladd, Jr. (27), b. 13 Apr 1818, Halowell, ME to Samuel Greenleaf Ladd & Caroline De Oliver Vinal. He taught Military Tactics aboard the Ship Brooklyn. He never married. He accompanied the "gold train" to SLC in 1849, no doubt as a guard. Resided in Salt Lake City where he commanded the Artillery. For a time, he was a member of Brigham Young's household in the capacity of a "woodsman". He was sent by Brighan Young in 1876 to pioneer St. Joseph, Navaho Co., AZ. He was county surveyor for two terms and justice of peace for 12 years. He was a highly respected pioneer in the settlements on the Little Colorado River.

Ann Frances Moses (12), b. 3 Mar 1834, Westfield, Hampden Co., MA., m. 29 October 1850 Eustaquio Valencia. He was grandson of Don Jose Sanchez who was the owner of the Burra Burra Rancho which covered the hills from South San Francisco to Millbrae. The Valencia's had come to San Francisco with the DeAnza Party to build the Presidio. Valencia Street in San Francisco is named after his father Gen. Jose Candalerio Valencia who m. Paula Rodriga Leandra Sanchez.
Ann Frances Moses Valencia d. 5 Feb 1859, age 25 in San Francisco, leaving 4 children, 2 survived to adulthood. They are Lydia Ensign Valencia (Hardy) and Henry Lucius Valencia. They came to Utah to live with their Aunt Clarissa. Ann Frances Moses Valencia was the first non-Catholic buried in the Mission Dolores.

He died in 1868, there were 2 surviving children from this marriage; Camilla Ensign Mason and Ambrose Todd Mason. Clarissa and her children came to Utah in 1872 after the death of her husband and her mother. In San Francisco, she lived with her Uncle Samuel Ensign and later supported her family as a seamstress. m. 2nd 16 Jun 1875 Angus Munn Cannon in Salt Lake City. They had 3 children named: Samuel Brannan Cannon, Erastus Snow Cannon, and Alice Cannon. She served as a counselor to President Louise Felt on the First General Primary Board.

He sent a ship to Valpariso, Chile, for fruit and vegetables to sell to the 49ers and made a fortune. He owned a small sloop in which he sailed passengers to Sutter's Fort to pan gold. He m. May 1854 Delina Cheney and had 4 children viz Marian L., Joseph C., Frederick W., and

Lucy Jane Nutting (20), was born 1 Oct 1825 in Hatfield, MA to Bryant Nutting and Matilda Belding. Lucy was baptized 14 April 1843 by John M. Wooley in the Little River (MA). She was the only member of her family to join the LDS Church, she was age 21 and unmarried. She had been working in a factory and laid up enough money to pay her passage from New York to San Francisco. Lucy found employment in SF as a waitress in John H. Brown's newly opened Portsmouth House Hotel. She m. James Ferguson, an Irish Convert, in San Francisco. He was a Sgt. Major in the Mormon Battalion. After the wedding, they rode a black stallion all the way to SLC. They traveled with the Ebenezer Brown Company leaving California 10 Aug 1848 arriving SLC 10 Oct 1848. Her husband, James Ferguson became a lawyer and orator, and a very popular actor on the stage in Salt Lake City, he died 30 Aug 1863 at the age of 35. She raised 5 children.

Elijah Ward Pell (40), b. 6 Jun 1806 New Rochelle, Westchester, NY to Frederick and Mary Pell. He was chosen by Sam Brannan as one of his counselors. He was Sheriff of San Francisco, cousin of fellow passenger Frank Ward. Was living in Salt Lake City, UT in 1852. In the 1870's, a Dr. Ward Pell helped to organize a small Branch of the LDS Church in Sacramento.

In San Francisco, he worked as a printer's apprentice on the "California Star" and drove the first horse that ever worked in harness there. He made good money as a teamster. He went with his family round trip to NJ. & crossed the plains to SLC in 1853 driving a mule team. He was mayor of Logan, postmaster, fire chief, school trustee. He 1st m. 22 Nov 1855 Jane Adeline Young, m. 2nd 7 Jul 1865 Martha Allen, and m. 3rd 24 Jan 1878 Harriet Vilate Pitkin. He was the grandfather of 75 children.

After the birth of his daughter & death of his wife, he went to San Bernardino, CA and built the first gristmill. m. 2nd 4 Jul 1852 Esther Ann Crismon. She mothered 9 children of her own, plus Sarah the child of his 1st marriage, plus the 3 orphaned sons of George=s elder brother, Mephibosheth Sirrine (who was the 1st LDS missionary to die on his mission. He is buried at Winter Quarters, NE.). The family was called to settle Bear Lake, ID in 1864. In 1877, they were pioneers in Mesa, AZ.

In the newspaper article John stated that he had gone to California for his "health" and denied any affiliation with the "Mormons".

Catherine Clark Smith (26), b. 2 Jun 1817, Scotland to Archibald & Mary Clark. After the death of her husband Robert Smith, m. 2nd 4 Feb 1849 Isaac Harrison a Mormon Battalion Veteran. Farmed in Fremont, CA. He took his family and led a group of LDS members from the Bay Area to SLC in 1858. She was a mid-wife. Her 2nd husband, Isaac Harrison, was Justice of Peace and Postmaster for many years in Sandy, UT.

Zelnora Sophronia Snow (22), was born 25 Feb 1824, Bernardston, Franklin Co., MA to Prince Snow and Asenath Scott. At age 19, she went to Lowell, MA to work in a factory. She began attending the LDS Church and was baptized 11 Apr 1844. She was a tailor by trade, she went with the Glover Family to SLC with the "gold train" July, 1849, she became 2nd wife of William Glover, Jr. 7 Jul 1851, she had 5 children.

Quartus Strong Sparks (25), b. 27 Oct 1820 Northhampton, Hampshire, MA to David Sparks and Mercy Thayer. 1st m. 3 Aug 1844 to Mary Holland Hamilton in Hartford, CT. He owned Sparks Ferry in the San Joaquin Valley and ran a large trading post. In 1851, he contributed $90. to Parley P. Pratt's missionary fund. Later he practiced law in San Bernardino, and gave $400. to Hosea Stout who was going to serve a mission in China. He was arrested a number of times for alcohol abuse and adultry. After his wife Mary divorced him in 1858 and took their 5 children to Beaver, UT, he m. and divorced 3 more women. He moved to Los Angeles in 1878.

Bishop and Mayor in Payson, UT. m. 1st 1 Dec 1844 Ann Cook in Boston, Ma and had 4 children. m. 2nd Elizabeth Baldwin who had 11 children; and, m. 3rd Ann
Priscella Birkenhead who had 7 children. He had a total of 86 grand children.

Simeon Stivers (20), b. 23 Jul 1826 Camden, NJ. Orphaned at the age of 3, he was adopted by his Uncle and Aunt Earl & Letitia Marshall. He was a farmer by trade, but, as a carpenter, he assisted in the building of the first public school house in California. When gold was first discovered, he mined near the American River and was quite successful. m. 12 September 1858 Anna Maria Jones. There is now a civic center and a major city park containing a lake, in Fremont named in his honor. He owned 612 acres of prime Bay Area real estate at the time of his death appraised at $79,000.

William Stout (30), b. 1824 Black Lake, NY. He was a school teacher by trade. He headed the "New Hope" farm project in San Juaquin Valley. He was described as a school master, a lawyer, and a choir director. He was especially good in the Spanish Language. Lyman and Rich used him to interpret the Lugo Deed for the purchase of the ranch that became San Bernardino. He was a distant cousin of Hosea Stout. His Will was probated in 1886 in San Bernardino.

Jesse A Stringfellow (22), b.17 Nov 1823 Westchester, Chester County, PA. When the Mexican War broke out, he enlisted under Col. J. C. Fremont. He served until the War ended and then went into mining. He did very well. He worked as a carpenter in San Francisco and was a successful farmer in San Jose. m. 5 June 1850, Sophronia Roberts, she having crossed the plains in 1849. They raised 3 children.
d. 1878 leaving an estate worth $53,500.

Thomas King Tomkins (29), b. 15 Aug 1817, Walcott, Lincolnshire, England to John Tompkins and Elizabeth Blow. He was at Sutter's Fort in 1847-'48, then traveled to the Salt Lake Valley in 1848. On 15 Sep 1850, he and his entire family sailed to the Society Islands [Tahiti] on an LDS Mission. They went to UT. in 1858. They returned to San Bernardino in 1862. After the death of his wife Jane E. Rollins, he m. 2nd 1865 Artemesia Floradona Perry. They became the parents of 7 children.

Jane Elizabeth Tomkins (3), b. 11 Jan 1843, Dansville, Steuben Co., NY to Thomas King Tomkins and Jane E. Rollins. m. Jesse Divined Hunter, Mormon Indian Agent and Commander of a Company in the Mormon Battalion and very influencial in the establishment of San Bernardino. They eventually divorced. She wrote "Story of the Brooklyn Saints" used by Andrew Jensen in his manuscript "Journal History of the CA. Mission I". She had no children.

Edward H. Von Phister (b. 1823, Boston, MA or 1813, NY. He was a business man and a 1st Class Passenger on the Ship Brooklyn, non LDS. Possibly embarked on Ship Brooklyn in Hawaii. His house in Benicia is still standing. He was on the First City Council of Benicia, CA and held several public offices over the years. He was owner of various hotels and stores in Benicia and carried on a thriving shipping trade with Hawaii.

George King H. Winner (39), b. 1806 Toms River, Monmouth, NJ to Jonathan Winner and Sarah Prigshorn. In 1851, he was set apart by Parley P. Pratt as the San Francisco Branch President. For a time the Church met in his home. In 1848, he was the first man to pilot a large vessel from San Francisco to Sacramento. During the gold rush, he piloted Sam Brannan's ship, The Comet. On 11 Sep 1861 Joined 2nd California Cavalry, Company L,
U.S. Army in Santa Cruz, CA., they protected the overland stage route and the Pony Express and had many conflicts with the Indians. Mustered out at Camp Douglas, UT on 7 Oct 1864 upon expiration of term. According to the San Mateo Gazzette, he
